Porsche History

Porsche is a renowned German automobile manufacturer with an emphasis in high-performance luxury sports cars, SUVs and sedans. Founded by Ferdinand Porsche in 1931, what started as a development work and consulting turned into the first Porsche, the Porsche 64 in 1939 after their success in designing the original Volkswagen Beetle. The first Porsche donned the Porsche’s company logo, the coat of arms of the Free People’s State of Württemberg of Weimar Germany. Porsche has continued to innovate and pay homage to the original classic through its design accents and curves, Porsche’s current lineup includes the 718 Boxster, Cayman, 911, Panamera, Macan, Cayenne and the newest all-electric line of Taycans.

Porsche Design and Influences

Not many brands are known across the world, recognizable at first glance with elegance and power. The Porsche brand has left its mark throughout its over 70 year history, becoming known for its stunning timeless designs and pursuit to seamlessly merge style and substance.

Ferdinand Porsche strived to create the perfect car inside and out, refusing to compromise power for style. His efforts led him to designing the first Porsche, a dynamic coupe that combined its modern and unmistakable appearance with a aerodynamic frame and agile performance. Porsche was designed to turn heads and hearts, leaving everyone from the driver and passengers to the spectators satisfied.

A timeless design, the unmistakable silhouette of the 911 is characterized by its iconic flyline. It has barely changed since 1963, and has shaped the DNA of all Porsche models. Including, of course, the 911 Cabriolet and Targa models.

The long, flat hood, the steeply inclined windshield and the roof line that slopes gently down towards the rear, is a cornerstone design found across the Porsche lineup. Uniting traditional and modern design, the Porsche lineup has continued to progress to the future while still paying homage to its past.

Porsche Milestones and Innovations

1940s-1950s

Starting in 1948, when the birth of the Porsche brand in Gmünd (Austria) arrived on the scene and introduced the world to the Porsche’s type 356 “No. 1” Roadster. After its class victory by its further enhanced 356 SL at the 24h of Le Mans, Porsche immediately gained attention throughout the world.

From 1953 onwards Porsche’s next innovation was the 550 Spyder, an instant classic with a mid-engine designed for motorsport specifically and saw spectacular success. The 10,000th Porsche 356 was produced just eight years after the Typ 356 “No. 1” Roadster came out.

1960s-1970s

1962 was a big year for Porsche, the Porsche 804 won the French Grand Prix and the 50,000th Porsche rolled off the assembly line. A year later Porsche introduced the legendary 911, a fastback coupé with a 2+2 seating arrangement and two-litre, 6-cylinder 130 hp flat-six engine at the rear.

The 1970s saw the 917 Short-Tail Coupé’s first ever overall victory at Le Mans, the Porsche 917/30’s victory at the Canadian-American racing series, and multiple world championships. Later in the 1970s the first 911 Turbo was born, the world’s first production sports car with exhaust turbocharger and pressure regulator and the 924, Porsche first produced a front-engined sports car in a transaxle configuration and with galvanised body panels.

1980s-1990s

The Porsche 944 with a 163 hp and a 4-cylinder engine came out in the 1980s. Later in the same decade Porsche celebrated the 25th anniversary year of the 911 by introducing the newly developed 911 Carrera 4 with all-wheel drive. While in the 1990s, the first twin-turbo engine in a 911 to the 1 millionth Porsche rolled off the assembly line.

2000s-Today

2000s revamped and updated Porsche’s classic look to new models. At the Louvre in Paris, Porsche displayed the high-performance Carrera GT sports car. The study featured a carbon-fibre chassis, as well as a 10-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine. 2002 saw the third car line come out with the new Porsche Cayenne, a sporty, off-road Cayenne SUV.

New car lines have continued to roll out, from the new Panamera that brought sports car technology to the premium sedan segment, the sporty and powerful Macan SUV, and the latest all-electric Mission E lineup which saw the newest Taycan begin to take over the electric segment today. Each model offers even more functionality, versatility, and technology than ever before without losing sight of the racing spirit of Porsche’s origins.
